OUTREACH PROGRAMME SCREENING

First of all we enjoyed the outreaches very much. Sometimes it was very adventurous to arrive at the different communities. Mostly we used the motorbike, because on the one hand it was easier and cheaper to reach the communities but on the other hand it was not so save as a car, especially when it was raining and the roads were very bad or the drivers were unable to drive well and safe. Therefore it is recommended for the organization to have its own car to carry out these duties. This would be very helpful, specifically for those volunteers, who are afraid of driving with motorbikes. In this case we want to say thank you very much to Emma, because he always did his best, that we felt safe and comfortable. Before we came for the outreach programme screening we informed the chiefs of the villages for the appointment when we will come back for the programme. On the date of the outreach programme screening Emma always explained to the residents how important the screening is and what we want to do and check, in their language Ewe, because a lot of people are not able to speak English. Afterwards we prayed together and then we started. It was always very busy. Emma wrote the ID-cards and we (Kate and Mel) measured the vital signs, like weight, temperature, blood pressure and blood sugar level. And after this, every resident has a face to face conversation with Emma, where he explained the results to the individuals and what he or she can do for a better health. If something was not fine with the individual we discussed it together to find the best solution. We gave medicine to people who couldn't go to hospital immediately or didn't have enough money. Thanks to Emma for the translating all the time, we know that you were very busy with your work as a manager, administrator, clerk and healthcare assistant at the same time. Afterwards we gave the children from the communities some donations like toys, toffees and clothes. Sometimes there were also people with wounds, so we dress their wounds for them. Last but not least we always made a picture together as a reminder for what we have done. The communities were always deeply grateful for the work, which we have done for them. Sometimes they cooked for us some typical Ghanaian-food (often very spicy for us European) or they gave us some thank-you gifts, like fruits, vegetables and cottons after the screening. Two weeks later we made a review in the communities, to see if the people with high blood pressure or blood sugar level have attended hospital with their ID-cards giving to them for confirmation and medication if condition persists. THANK U EMMA!!
